O Dia Nacional da Imprensa passou a ser comemorado oficialmente em 01 de junho por força da lei 9831/99 sancionada pelo governo do então presidente Fernando Henrique Cardoso.
Até 1999 o Dia Nacional da Imprensa era comemorado em 10 de setembro, data que começou a circular no país o primeiro jornal publicado em terras brasileiras, Gazeta do Rio de Janeiro, em 1808.
Publicado duas vezes na semana, o periódico era basicamente voltado para divulgação de comunicados do governo e informes sobre a política internacional .
O primeiro editor foi o Frei Tibúrcio José da Rocha, e o primeiro redator foi Manuel Ferreira de Araújo Guimarães.
