A Ortopedia  é a especialidade médica que utiliza métodos clínicos, físicos e cirúrgicos para tratar e corrigir enfermidades, lesões e deformidades ósseas dos músculos,  tendões, articulações e ligamentos, e de tudo que relaciona-se ao aparelho locomotor, ao sistema esquelético e estruturas associadas.

A data escolhida para homenagear o profissional de ortopedia coincide com a da fundação da Sociedade Brasileira de Ortopedia e Traumatologia (SBOT), em 1935, e que se tornou a maior instituição de Ortopedia e Traumatologia da América Latina e uma das maiores do mundo. No Brasil, as especialidades de Ortopedia e Traumatologia são unificadas, porém a traumatologia se dedica às lesões que podem ser produzidas na coluna e nas extremidades, enquanto a ortopedia, às doenças e deformidades do aparelho locomotor como um todo.
